'Alien’ object getting attention from Congress | FOX 10 Talks
On Fox 10 Talks, Harvard professor Dr. Avi Loeb joins us again to discuss a new proposal concerning the interstellar object 3I/Atlas, a mission that has garnered the attention of Congress. Dr. Loeb, in collaboration with Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, has proposed redirecting NASA's Juno spacecraft to investigate the object instead of ending its mission by crashing it into Jupiter. This mission could provide crucial data about the mysterious object's nature using Juno's many instruments.
Dr. Loeb also introduced his "Loeb scale," which ranks objects based on whether they appear to be of natural or technological origin. This new scale is particularly relevant to 3I/Atlas, as Hubble Space Telescope images show a peculiar glow in front of the object, not a trailing tail like a typical comet. Scientists are still trying to understand this phenomenon, as there is no evidence of the carbon-based molecules that usually characterize cometary plumes.
Regarding a potential alien encounter, Dr. Loeb emphasizes the need for an international response coordinated among all humans. He believes that if humanity were to identify a technological object ranking high on his scale, it would require a unified discussion between policymakers and scientists. Dr. Loeb suggests that an external threat could bring people together, potentially leading to a "messianic era" of peace on Earth.
