The day after Hurricane Dorian came through NC we went offshore fishing. There were huge debris fields in the water and we saw everything from pieces of docks, doors and windows, propane tanks, trees and dead horses. When we got closer we saw a 12' Tiger Shark eating the horse. The horse appears to be one from the wild Cedar Island Herd. Initially it was believed that no horses were lost and sadly this was not the case. There were a number of wild horses and wild cows swept out to sea by what was called a mini tsunami caused by the hurricane. Estimates of an 8' wave coming from the sound side swept the horses into the water and either due to age or injury they were not able to swim to safety.
You can read an article that was published in the Charlotte Observer about the storm and the horses here: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/new...
***Update Nov. 2019*** 3 of the wild cows that were believed to have died were actually found on an island 3 miles from their original location.
