North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a personal letter to President Moon Jae-in offering condolences as the country fights against the COVID-19 outbreak.
The regime has not responded to Seoul's contacts, and this is the first communication between the duo in 2020.
Kim Min-ji has our top story.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has expressed sympathy toward South Korea as it battles against the COVID-19 outbreak... and hoped the country is able to overcome the situation.
South Korea's top office said Thursday... Kim sent a letter to President Moon Jae-in the previous day.
"In his letter, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un conveyed a message of comfort to the South Korean people in their battle against COVID-19. He also expressed hope that they will win the battle. Kim added that he will pray for the health of the people in the South."
The top office added that Kim also said he was worried about President Moon's health... and that it's regrettable that there isn't much he can do to help.
The North Korean leader said he would quietly send his best wishes to Moon in overcoming the crisis.
Kim also expressed his candid thoughts regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula,... but the Blue House didn't elaborate.
President Moon sent a reply expressing his gratitude.
This is a first exchange of letters between Moon and Kim this year,... with the last one sent by the North Korean leader when President Moon's mother passed away in October last year.
The timing has drawn attention as it comes a day after Kim's sister Kim Yo-jung issued a strong statement slamming South Korea's presidential office for expressing concerns over the North's short-range projectile launches on Monday.
There's hope, though, that the latest letter could turn the tables and rediscover momentum for inter-Korean cooperation.
President Moon had recently stressed the need for the two Koreas to work together in response to the spread of COVID-19.
A Blue House official said that related issues could be discussed through existing channels,... but refused to comment on the details of the letter citing 'diplomatic custom'.
Whether this will spark a breakthrough remains to be seen... but the Blue House see's it as a positive development for now, at least.
"The top office said that the letter was able to reaffirm the trust and friendship between Moon and Kim... and that the two Koreas continue to pursue peace.
Kim Min-ji, Arirang News."
